Compass is an essential tool for determining direction nowadays, with 'N' representing the direction of North. It is mostly used in activities that require precise directional guidance such as sailing and exploration. Compass can quickly assist people in identifying their direction and understanding their path ahead. Originating from China, the compass is one of the four major inventions of ancient China, consisting of a magnetic needle, Si Nan (a compass with a magnetic spoon), and a compass rose.

I. The Development of the Compass

The history of the compass in China is rich and long, dating back to the Warring States period. At that time, a magnetic stone was shaped into a spoon and pushed by a vehicle to indicate direction for military purposes, known as Si Nan, which can be regarded as the earliest recorded prototype of the compass. As trade and navigation flourished during the Tang Dynasty, there was an urgent need for a device that could easily distinguish directions, leading to the development of the compass.

The compass was first used for navigation in the Song Dynasty. When it was brought to the East, it marked the beginning of the Great Navigation Age in the East. It can be said that the Chinese compass helped the East to reach other continents through sea routes. Without the Chinese compass, the East would have to wait at least another hundred years to explore new routes. In the Ming Dynasty, the government also began to use sea routes for exchanges with other countries, with Zheng He's voyages to the West being the most notable example, demonstrating the indelible impact of the compass on the growth of navigation.

II. Why is it Called Compass Rather than Pointing North Device?

The compass has four letters on it: NESW, which correspond to North, East, South, and West respectively. The pointer on the compass points to the 'N' letter, indicating the direction of North. Theoretically, it should be called a pointing north device. However, there are two reasons why it is not named as such.

Firstly, the compass determines direction through magnetism. At the two poles, the compass may not work effectively due to special magnetic conditions. The direction of the magnetic field is consistent with the geographical direction. Specifically, the geographic North Pole corresponds to the magnetic South Pole. Therefore, it is called a compass rather than pointing north device.

Secondly, as the invention originated from China, it has been called Si Nan since ancient times. It is more common and natural to use "south" in its name rather than "north". Saying "south" sounds smoother than "north" when it comes to naming the invention. Therefore, despite its primary function of pointing north, it is commonly referred to as a compass.
